Every day, we bring you a detailed overview of recent news and updates about primary decisions, community feedback, or legislative changes relevant to the short-term rental industry. 📰
The Los Angeles City Council has voted to strengthen enforcement against illegal short-term rentals, particularly those involving rent-controlled properties.
The council’s new measures include requiring rental platforms to block illegal listings automatically, allowing residents to sue violators, consolidating enforcement into a single dedicated unit, and increasing fines. Officials aim to implement an electronic verification system similar to New York City’s, which significantly reduced unauthorized listings.

Clark County residents and officials continue to debate short-term rental enforcement as the county pledges a tougher stance on violations. Code enforcement officials announced plans to impose property liens for unpaid fines and contract a monitoring service to identify unlicensed rentals.
Officials set a September 1 deadline for rental platforms to obtain business licenses and are considering changes to the application process to expedite approvals.
Park Township’s Zoning Board of Appeals held a public hearing on the township’s short-term rental ban with rental owners arguing for grandfather status under a 1974 zoning ordinance.
The township maintains that STRs were never explicitly allowed, and the current ordinance simply clarifies existing rules. Officials postponed their decision until April 21, 2025, when another meeting will be held.

Steamboat Springs is cracking down on illegal short-term rentals by targeting property managers who advertise unlicensed properties.

The city has cited 26 violations this year—matching all of 2024—and is investigating at least 10 more. To streamline enforcement, the city will first send notices to non-compliant property managers before pursuing legal action, which could result in $2,650 daily fines and a two-year ban.
The City of Mentor, Ohio has officially banned short-term rentals defining them as dwellings with five or fewer rooms rented for 30 days or less.
The ordinance passed on March 18, 2025 was declared an emergency measure aimed at protecting public peace, health, and welfare. City officials emphasized the need for regulation due to concerns over neighborhood disruptions. Under the new law, property owners found in violation could face fines of up to $250 per day.
Port Austin has proposed three ordinances tightening rules on trailer coaches, RVs, and short-term rentals.
The first would ban overnight camping on private residential property unless in licensed parks. The second restricts where trailer coaches can be parked, prohibiting overnight stays outside designated areas and imposing fines for violations. The third introduces a short-term rental licensing system, requiring operators to have a local agent within 25 miles.
