Every day, we bring you a detailed overview of recent news and updates about primary decisions, community feedback, or legislative changes relevant to the short-term rental industry. 📰

Utah

A new study from Utah State University confirms what many Bear Lake locals have been feeling: short-term rentals are eroding the community fabric in this popular vacation area straddling the Utah-Idaho border.

Through interviews with residents in both states, researchers found widespread concern over how platforms like Airbnb have transformed neighborhoods, making housing less affordable and replacing long-term neighbors with a constant stream of tourists. The growth in STRs has also led to noise complaints, trash problems, and infrastructure strain.

Atlanta, GA

Atlanta has spent over six years debating how to regulate short-term rentals, yet an estimated 10,000 operate largely unchecked due to delayed enforcement and policy gridlock.

A 2022 ordinance introduced licensing and taxes but was never enforced. Residents in neighborhoods like Home Park say STRs disrupt communities, while operators argue they support tourism and jobs. With the 2026 World Cup approaching, pressure is mounting for Atlanta to finalize a regulatory framework before it’s too late.

Southold, NY

Southold Town is stepping up its crackdown on illegal short-term rentals with the help of a new monitoring tool called Rentalscape, which allows the town to detect when properties are being rented for fewer than 14 days, a violation of its current law.

Officials have also added a part-time code enforcement officer to focus on nights and weekends, and the town now has 40 active STR cases in court. Town Board members say they plan to begin implementing the new permitting system this fall, and have also pledged to coordinate code changes with nearby Greenport Village.

Nuangola, PA

Nuangola Borough in Pennsylvania is taking a proactive approach to short-term rental regulation, with the Borough Council set to consider an ordinance on July 8 that would restrict such rentals to specific zoning districts.

Under the proposal, short-term rentals would be banned in R-1 single-family zones, allowed in R-2 multi-family areas with a special exception, and permitted by right in commercial and industrial districts. Permit requirements, occupancy limits, and parking rules are also part of the measure, though fees will be set later by council resolution.

Wickliffe, OH

Wickliffe City Council is weighing a potential ban on short-term rentals after a string of noise complaints and growing unease about corporate home purchases.

At a recent meeting, Councilperson Randy Gerhardstein pointed to Mayfield Heights' and Eastlake’s recent STR bans and suggested Wickliffe adopt similar rules. The Council has now referred the issue to its Committee of the Whole, signaling that formal legislation, possibly including a 30-day minimum rental rule, may be on the way.

Pointe Coupee Parish, LA

Pointe Coupee Parish is drafting a new ordinance to regulate short-term rentals like Airbnb and Vrbo, especially around the popular False River area.

Parish President Major Thibaut says many properties are unregistered and not paying taxes, and the proposed ordinance aims to ensure safety, prevent overcrowding, and level the playing field. The plan includes registration, tax compliance, and clear rules. A public hearing and vote on the ordinance is set for July 8 in New Roads.
