Akron’s Short-Term Rental Debate Heats Up After Tragic Reminder
Akron’s City Council chambers got a little more passionate this week as residents and local leaders revisited the ongoing debate over short-term rentals. With concerns ranging from neighborhood safety to housing affordability, residents are calling for more decisive action — and they made their voices heard loud and clear.
West Akron resident Joe Rusek spoke during the public comment period, urging council members to revive and complete long-discussed legislation that would ban short-term rentals in residential areas. His argument? These rentals “turn homes into hotels,” bringing with them a rise in noise complaints, parking headaches, and fewer long-term housing options for locals. Rusek also raised alarms about investors scooping up homes to convert into Airbnbs or VRBO listings — a trend he believes is slowly chipping away at neighborhood stability and community connection.

Councilman Bolden added weight to the discussion, referencing a recent Airbnb tragedy in nearby Bath, where one person was killed and nine others were injured. Citing City Code Article 37 and Section 111620, Bolden questioned who, exactly, ensures Akron’s short-term rental laws are enforced. He also pressed for answers about whether emergency responders know the locations of these rentals when dispatched — and if the city is actually collecting bed tax revenue from them.
Bolden proposed a coordinated review across multiple departments, including housing, zoning, licensing, and taxation, to close enforcement gaps before a similar incident occurs in Akron. Despite these passionate calls, council members did not take formal action on new short-term rental rules during the meeting. The issue remains on hold — but clearly, not off the radar.
As Akron continues grappling with balancing tourism, safety, and housing stability, it’s clear that the push for stronger short-term rental oversight is gaining momentum. The coming months may determine whether council members turn these community concerns into concrete policy changes.
