Beaumont City Council Begins Exploring Short-Term Rental Oversight

Beaumont’s City Council is taking the first steps toward regulating short-term rental properties, responding to the growing number of these listings in the city. At a March 4 meeting, city officials discussed the potential for a new ordinance that could include an annual inspection and the collection of a transient occupancy tax (TOT) for short-term rentals.
Currently, there are over 40 short-term rental properties in Beaumont, but the city has no formal regulations for them. The rise of platforms like Airbnb and VRBO has made it easier for homeowners to rent out their properties, but the city is concerned about issues such as parking, neighborhood cohesion, and enforcement of housing rules.
Darron Usher, the city’s principal management analyst, highlighted the possibility of collecting an estimated $55,000 in annual TOT revenue if short-term rentals are properly regulated. However, enforcing these regulations would require the city to hire a consultant with initial costs estimated between $15,000 and $35,000.
Council member Lloyd White emphasized the importance of preparing for the 2028 Olympics, suggesting that regulating short-term rentals could help capture more revenue from visitors staying in these properties. Mayor Pro Tem Jessica Voigt questioned whether the potential revenue was worth the costs of setting up a regulatory system.
Despite some concerns, Mayor Mike Lara supported the idea of a registration system to better track short-term rentals and ensure they comply with any future regulations. As the council continues to research the issue, Beaumont residents can expect further discussions on how best to manage this growing segment of the local hospitality market.
