Claremont Lifts STR Ban Starting June 12: New Rules, Permits, and What Hosts Need to Know

Big news out of Claremont! After years of banning short-term rentals (STRs), the city council has officially flipped the switch. At a meeting on May 13, the council passed an ordinance (4-1 vote) to allow STRs for the first time in recent memory. The new rules go into effect on June 12, kicking off a one-year pilot program to see how STRs fit into Claremont’s residential fabric.
👉Here’s what hosts and neighbors need to know:
🔑 Permits Are Required: If you want to list your home on Airbnb, Vrbo, or any other platform, you’ll need a city permit. It’ll cost you $585 up front, plus $435 annually to renew. Inspections are part of the deal—fail one, and you’ll pay a $95 re-inspection fee.
🚫 No Party Houses: The city’s making it clear—STRs are for lodging, not for events. Hosting weddings or big parties? That’s a no-go under the new rules.
🚗 Parking Rules: Hosts must provide one on-site parking spot per bedroom—no relying on street parking.
👥 Guest Limits: Overnight guests are capped at eight people per STR.
🏘️ Only Single-Family Homes Allowed: STR permits are only available for single-family dwellings. That means no multi-unit buildings, duplexes, or apartments.
🗺️ Short-Term Rental Zones: The city has mapped out “STR Zones” where rentals are allowed. Each district has a cap of 20 STR permits, so space is limited. First-come, first-served!

This change comes after years of debate about balancing property rights, housing availability, and neighborhood impact. The city will monitor how the program plays out over the next year—so if you’re thinking of getting in the STR game, now’s the time.
