With the 2026 FIFA World Cup headed to the U.S. next summer, short-term rental hosts from coast to coast are bracing for what could be their biggest moment yet. Ticket sales opened last week, and with an estimated six million soccer fans expected across three countries, the demand for overnight stays is already heating up.

Here in the Northeast, the buzz is real. Matches are scheduled in Boston, New York, and Philadelphia — and property managers along Connecticut’s shoreline see themselves perfectly placed to catch the overflow. Eric Khan, who owns and manages rentals in the area, says guests are drawn to “a more centralized location” for easy access to multiple host cities.

Nationwide, Airbnb expects about 400,000 guests during the tournament, and some markets are scrambling to prepare. Kansas City, one of the host cities, is even offering a “World Cup Hosting Crash Course” to help would-be hosts learn pricing, insurance, and cleaning tips. Missouri Vacation Home Alliance president Tyann Marcink Hammond says the goal is to ensure safety, great experiences, and maybe even a taste of Kansas City barbecue.

But opportunity comes with responsibility. Industry experts like Dave Krauss of Rent Responsibly are reminding hosts to brush up on local laws before opening their doors. “Almost every city has a set of rules and requirements for operating a short-term rental,” Krauss cautions. “That’s your first stop shop.”

Those rules can be very different from one community to another. In Connecticut, where Khan operates, regulations are relatively relaxed compared to cities where short-term rentals are tightly restricted or even banned. With the World Cup countdown now on, it’s clear: STR hosts who prepare early — and know the local playbook — stand the best chance of scoring big when fans arrive next summer.
