Lake Forest Puts STR Ban on Hold After Pushback - Voting Delayed

Lake Forest Puts STR Ban on Hold After Pushback
The conversation over short-term rentals in Daphne’s Lake Forest subdivision is heating up—but the big vote will have to wait. The Lake Forest Home Owners Association Board of Directors has delayed its August 28 vote on whether to halt short-term rentals in the community, pushing the decision to September after receiving a wave of resident feedback.
At the center of the debate are roughly 30 homes in Lake Forest currently operating as short-term rentals. HOA President Byrian Ramsey says many residents worry that STRs chip away at the neighborhood’s stable, close-knit feel.
“Families choose this community because it offers a sense of neighborliness and consistency,” Ramsey noted, adding that residents fear a “rotating door of guests” has no long-term stake in the area.
Concerns run deeper than just culture and community spirit. Some residents have raised the alarm over:
- Property values – fearing STR activity may lower home prices.
- Accountability gaps – arguing that STR guests aren’t bound to the same community rules and amenities usage as permanent residents.
- Safety and security – reports of unfamiliar vehicles, strangers in the neighborhood, and a general sense of unease have been cited.

The proposed policy change wouldn’t shut the door on renting entirely—it would encourage leases of six months or longer, down from the previous definition of “long-term” as 12 months. Ramsey stressed the amendment isn’t anti-renter, noting that responsible landlords with stable tenants can be an asset to the community.
Originally, members were set to vote on Aug. 28, with a two-thirds approval of attendees required for passage. But an Aug. 11 email informed residents that the HOA’s Architectural Committee will first review the amendment and issue a recommendation based on the feedback already received.
That means September will now bring the pivotal decision—one that could reshape the rental landscape in Lake Forest for years to come.
