Del Mar’s Digital Watchdog: New STR Tracking System Launches

Del Mar is stepping up its short-term rental game with a digital watchdog designed to bring order to the city’s booming vacation market. The City Council this week approved a $60,000, three-year contract with Deckard Technologies to monitor and manage STR activity across the community.

Under the deal, Deckard will provide a full-service platform that handles registration, compliance checks, and enforcement tools. The system also comes with a 24/7 complaint hotline — giving neighbors a direct line to report nuisance rentals or other issues.

City leaders say the technology will help curb problems like late-night noise and parking congestion, which have long fueled tension between full-time residents and STR operators. “This is about accountability,” officials emphasized, noting that the system will ensure hosts play by the rules.

Del Mar’s broader STR ordinance, passed in 2024, is still making its way through the state approval process. The California Coastal Commission is set to review it this December, with final city adoption expected in 2026. By moving forward with monitoring now, Del Mar is aiming to be ready the moment the ordinance clears.

Residents will likely welcome the new hotline, which provides a faster response to complaints. And for property owners, the message is clear: it’s time to get registered and stay compliant.

With the Coastal Commission decision looming, Del Mar is positioning itself as a leader in using tech to manage the short-term rental surge — and keep the peace in paradise.
