Traffic, Safety, and STRs: Fishers Neighborhood Weighs In

The Fishers Board of Zoning Appeals tackled a heated topic on September 25, 2025: a proposed short-term rental (STR) in a residential neighborhood. Residents packed the meeting to share concerns about traffic, safety, and the potential impact on the community’s character.

Local resident Bobby Amler raised an initial red flag, pointing out that a van had blocked the sign announcing the meeting, which may have limited awareness among neighbors. He expressed worries about increased traffic and emphasized that STRs could attract a wide range of visitors, potentially leading to disturbances or crime in a community designed for residential living. “We need to consider how these rentals change the dynamic of our neighborhood,” he said.

Kyla Schertz echoed Amler’s concerns, noting that another STR already exists nearby. She highlighted safety risks for children and questioned whether the neighborhood could handle additional visitors. She also expressed unease about the meeting notification, suggesting that limited visibility of the sign could make it difficult for residents to fully understand the potential impacts.

Hannah Colacek added to the discussion by highlighting challenges related to construction and delivery vehicles tied to STR activity. She called for more proactive engagement from rental owners and stressed the importance of safety measures, particularly for children playing outdoors.

The meeting underscored a common theme in communities grappling with STRs: a desire to balance the benefits of property revitalization with maintaining a safe, cohesive neighborhood environment. While some residents see STRs as a way to support property upkeep and bring economic benefits, others worry about traffic, noise, and the changing character of their streets.

Board members listened carefully, taking notes on the concerns raised. They stressed that these viewpoints will play a key role in deliberations about whether the proposed STR should be approved. The outcome could set a precedent for how Fishers manages short-term rentals in residential areas moving forward.

As STRs continue to grow nationwide, Fishers’ experience illustrates the challenge of balancing homeowners’ rights with community welfare. Residents want to maintain neighborhood integrity while allowing for responsible property use, highlighting the nuanced decisions local boards face when regulating short-term rentals.

The Board of Zoning Appeals is expected to review the community input in the coming weeks before making a decision, giving residents another opportunity to participate in shaping the future of STRs in their neighborhood.
