Short-term rental operators in the Township of Georgian Bluffs now have until May 31 to meet annual licensing compliance requirements, a change approved by council at its February 2026 meeting along with the discontinuation of the township's 24/7 complaints hotline. The licensing program itself remains in force.

The May 31 compliance deadline pushed back from end-of-March gives operators a longer runway before peak summer season. The township's 24/7 complaints hotline deemed underutilized by staff has been discontinued with no replacement announced. Operators without a licence must apply through the township's online portal. The program, active since February 2025, charges $500 annually for primary or seasonal residences and $750 for non-owner-occupied properties with a two-licence cap per operator.
Council retained the program despite a staff recommendation to eliminate it which cited higher-than-expected costs and projected annual savings of $64,000. Acting Clerk Carly Craig noted complaint volumes had stayed consistent with pre-licensing levels, with no measurable reduction attributed to the program.
This is the legal framework used by Georgian Bluffs about licensing and regulating STRs.
The deciding factor was regional: dropping the framework risked attracting displaced operators from neighbouring municipalities. Northern Bruce Peninsula and Meaford both have active programs; Saugeen Shores voted against one in February 2026, the same month Georgian Bluffs chose to stay the course.
