Glen Ellyn Cracks Down on Short-Term Rentals Amid Complaints

Glen Ellyn has become the latest village in DuPage County to introduce strict regulations for short-term rentals, following a rise in complaints from residents.

The village’s board of trustees has voted to prohibit short-term rentals lasting 30 days or less, responding to growing concerns about noise, parking issues, and disruptive parties at rental properties.

Several complaints have been directed at properties offering short-term stays, particularly one home where loud parties, street congestion, and even reports of vomit on lawns were noted.

Trustee Kelley Kalinich acknowledged the rights of homeowners but emphasized the negative impact these rentals can have on neighborhoods.

“We already know of one situation that’s been extremely problematic,” she shared during a board meeting.

Glen Ellyn’s decision comes after similar measures in other suburbs, such as Schaumburg, which last year raised licensing fees and restricted corporate ownership of rental properties.

The new rules in Glen Ellyn will impose hefty fines for violators: $1,000 for a first offense, with penalties climbing to $2,500 for repeat offenders. The ordinance is set to take effect on May 14, but existing short-term rental agreements will be grandfathered in.

As local governments continue to adjust their approach to short-term rentals, it’s clear that many communities are balancing the need for regulation with the desire to maintain the character of residential neighborhoods. For Glen Ellyn, the message is clear—if you rent, keep it respectful.
