Imlay City Adopts New Ordinance Restricting Short-Term Rentals

It’s official! Imlay City is putting firm limits on short-term rentals. In a unanimous decision, city leaders approved an ordinance that caps the total number of STRs in residential areas at five and adds a few new layers of accountability for property owners.

Only certain zoning districts will allow these rentals, and hosts will now need a special land use permit before opening their doors to guests. They’ll also have to prove they can handle parking needs — a small but meaningful way to avoid street congestion and late-night frustration for neighbors.

The new policy comes after growing chatter from locals about noise complaints and disruptive weekend stays. City commissioners said they want to strike a balance: allowing some short-term rentals for economic benefit while preserving the calm of family neighborhoods.

But make no mistake — enforcement is built in. If a host breaks noise rules, fails inspections, or causes disturbances, their rental license can be revoked. No drawn-out warnings, no gray area.

This measured approach gives Imlay City a chance to test the waters. By starting small, with just five units and clear conditions, officials hope to learn what works and adjust as needed. For now, though, the message is clear: responsible hosting only — or you’re out.
