Permits, Limits & Peace of Mind: Lakewood Mulls New STR Rules

Lakewood is the latest city to take a closer look at short-term rentals (STRs) — and let’s just say, the conversation is heating up.

At a recent City Council meeting, concerned residents spoke up about the toll that some STRs are taking on their peace and quiet. The biggest gripes? Noise, over-occupancy, and homes being treated more like weekend party pads than part of a residential neighborhood.

“I don’t mind visitors,” one local said, “but the behavior when people aren’t at their homes is pretty remarkable.” It’s clear many neighbors feel like the charm of their tight-knit blocks is starting to unravel, and they’re urging the city to step in.

Enter the new proposed ordinance.

If passed, the legislation would require STR owners to obtain an annual permit, pass safety inspections, and follow strict rules around noise levels, occupancy, and property maintenance. These standards are designed to give the city more oversight — and give residents a break from STR chaos.

The ordinance is currently under review by Lakewood’s Housing and Development Committee, which will dive deeper into the proposal before it’s brought to a full vote by the City Council.

So far, the city hasn’t put a hard timeline on when that vote might take place, but the momentum is building. If adopted, these new requirements would apply to all short-term rentals within city limits, regardless of whether they’re hosted full-time or just a few weekends out of the year.

For local STR hosts, this could mean a few extra steps to stay in good standing. But for neighbors, it might mean the return of a quieter, more predictable community rhythm.

Stay tuned — Lakewood could soon be joining the growing list of towns tightening the reins on short-term rentals.
