Londonderry Votes to Rein In STR Growth

It’s official—Londonderry, Vermont is sticking to its guns when it comes to reigning in short-term rentals.
At a special town meeting this past Saturday, local residents voted 66 to 25 to uphold stricter regulations on new short-term rentals (STRs), a move that’s been brewing for months. The updated rules, which were first adopted by the select board earlier this year, were challenged by a group of residents who gathered enough signatures to force a town-wide vote.

But after two hours of lively discussion, the verdict was clear: the majority of the town is on board with the tighter controls.
So, what’s changing? The new regulations aim to tap the brakes on STR expansion in this scenic Windham County community, which sits close to popular ski resorts and currently hosts about 100 STRs. The rules are designed to preserve long-term housing for full-time residents, a concern echoed in towns across Vermont.

One of the headline changes is a 50-night cap on rentals per year—unless the host actually lives on the property. That’s right, if you’re not a resident owner, you’ll be limited to 50 rental nights annually. Another big shift? If you buy a home in Londonderry and don’t plan to live there, you’ll have to wait a full year before listing it as a short-term rental.
Importantly, these changes won’t affect existing, registered STRs. So for those already in the game, it’s business as usual—for now.
Londonderry joins a growing list of Vermont towns grappling with how to manage the rise of short-term vacation rentals. With a strong vote of confidence from residents, this small town is making it clear: the housing needs of full-timers matter, and the community isn’t afraid to draw a line in the snow.
