Mayfield Heights Lays Down the Law on STRs
Short-term rental hosts in Mayfield Heights may want to think twice before listing their property on Airbnb or Vrbo. A new ordinance passed by City Council is making waves—criminalizing STR operations and threatening hefty penalties for violators.
Until now, the city had enforced a temporary ban that blocked homeowners from renting out their spaces for short stays. But this newly approved law takes things much further: operating an STR is now a first-degree misdemeanor, punishable by up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine.
City officials say the decision was not made lightly. While homeowners do have rights, Councilman Michael Ballistrea emphasized that turning homes into unofficial hotels crosses a line.
“We realize that people have a right to utilize their property as well as they see fit, but this is not one of them,” Ballistrea said.
The ordinance also introduces an enforcement plan: the city will actively monitor STR platforms like Airbnb and Vrbo to track down illegal listings and press charges when necessary.
