Pittsford Grapples With STR Rules: Is Regulation Necessary?

The Village of Pittsford is deep in conversation over how—or even if—it should regulate short-term rentals (STRs) like Airbnb. During a joint meeting between the Village Board of Trustees and the Planning Board, officials reviewed a proposed local law that would outline clearer rules for operating STRs.

Trustee Lisa Cove noted how influential community feedback has been throughout the process. Emphasizing the goal of crafting a regulation that reflects a balance between residents’ concerns and business interests,

“I think everyone working together is going to be the secret to a successful local law,” she said.

But not all locals agree regulation is needed. Airbnb host Gene Cardamone, who rents out a village property, argued that Pittsford is nothing like cities dealing with tourism overload.

“This isn’t New Orleans,” he said. “This is a small bedroom community.”

Cardamone also stressed his own precautions like only renting to guests who’ve been on Airbnb for at least three to five years.

While the Planning Board brought forth recommendations to help shape the proposed rules, debate continues over what’s best for the village. Some board members and business advocates believe that STRs can help support local commerce. Others, however worry about neighborhood stability and the potential for transient rentals to alter the character of Pittsford.

Still, the process remains ongoing. The proposed STR law will be further discussed at the Village Board’s upcoming regular meeting on Tuesday. That session could determine how the village plans to handle STRs moving forward—and how much community input continues to influence those decisions.
