Pointe Coupee Pushes for STR Clarity with New Ordinance

Pointe Coupee Parish is jumping into the short-term rental conversation in a big way and it’s all about keeping things fair, safe, and above board. With the boom in Airbnb and Vrbo listings along scenic False River, the Parish Council is drafting its first-ever STR ordinance, aiming to bring order and structure to a growing industry.
Parish President Major Thibaut says the issue isn’t about stopping rentals. It’s about managing them responsibly.
“We’re happy to have visitors,” he said, “we just want to make sure we’re doing it the right way.”
Right now, short-term rentals in the area operate mostly on the honor system, with only about half of hosts reportedly registered with the parish or consistently paying sales and hotel-motel taxes. That’s what this ordinance hopes to change. Once adopted, it will require STRs to register, pay the appropriate taxes, and follow set safety and occupancy standards.
The proposed rules are designed to create a level playing field for all property owners while giving local officials the ability to enforce overcrowding limits and safety measures.

One homeowner in support of the ordinance is Karen Dibenedetto, who’s been renting out her beloved family property on False River.
“Everybody loves it,” she said. “I think it’s going to be a good thing to have ordinances and rules and regulations in place.”
The ordinance is nearing the finish line, with a public hearing and vote scheduled for Tuesday, July 8 at 5:30 p.m. at 160 East Main Street in New Roads. Community members, hosts, and renters are encouraged to attend and weigh in.
As more families flock to Pointe Coupee for weekend getaways and riverfront relaxation, this new ordinance could provide the framework to make STRs a safe, sustainable part of the local economy.
