STR Rules Back on the Table: Reno Council Eyed Regulation Before Summer Break
Before heading into its summer break, the Reno City Council is teeing up one more hot topic: Short-Term Rentals.
On June 4, Council considered whether to direct staff to begin drafting a new STR ordinance—a move that could significantly impact hosts, renters, and neighborhoods across the city.
While the agenda included a long list of items, from digital signage to park district planning, short-term rentals stood out as one of the most impactful for day-to-day residents. The proposed action didn’t implement new rules just yet—it was about whether to start the process of crafting an ordinance at all. But make no mistake, this was the spark that could lead to major changes in how STRs operate in Reno.
With many boards and commissions still on hiatus, the Council had more control over key policy decisions this week, and STRs were front and center.
The discussion could have addressed a range of regulatory options—from registration requirements and zoning limits to occupancy caps and enforcement strategies. As other cities in Nevada and beyond have moved to rein in STRs in recent years, all eyes were on whether Reno would follow suit—or take a more hands-off approach.
