Rindge Tightens the Screws on Short-Term Rentals

Rindge has entered the regulation game when it comes to short-term rentals — and it’s starting to hold hosts accountable in a more official way.
After voters approved new STR rules this past March, the town now requires any property owner renting for fewer than 30 days to apply for site plan approval and a conditional use permit from the Planning Board. These changes aim to bring order to what’s been, until recently, a loosely monitored corner of the real estate market.
This July, the Select Board agreed it’s time to nudge non-compliant STR owners into action. They’ve launched a notification campaign, sending letters to individuals currently operating STRs without permits. And they’re not stopping at the mailbox — notices are popping up on the town’s website, social media pages, and community bulletin boards.

If you’re in the short-term rental game and haven’t yet gotten your ducks in a row, it’s time to reach out to the Planning Office at 603-899-5181, Ext. 117. The review process checks for safety basics: proper septic and water systems, no more than three guests per bedroom, and a required life safety inspection. All pretty reasonable but also very much required.

The town isn’t throwing the hammer down just yet. This stage is more about education and enforcement through outreach. But officials made it clear – if a property comes to their attention and isn’t playing by the new rules, a letter is coming.
The Planning Board began reviewing STR applications earlier this month, and if July is any indication, this will be a busy season of onboarding. The message from Rindge is simple: if you’re renting out, it’s time to get legit.
