Hazel Park, MI
Hazel Park has approved a six-month moratorium on new short-term rental licenses following a fatal shooting at a rental property in May.
City officials said the pause will allow time to review existing regulations and explore stronger enforcement measures. Although the city already limits the number of STRs, restricts multiple-property ownership, and enforces operating rules, leaders said recent events highlighted the need to reassess oversight and compliance.

Santa Barbara, CA
Santa Barbara’s proposed short-term rental ordinance is advancing to the City Council after approval by the Ordinance Committee.

The revised proposal would prohibit short-term rentals and home shares in high fire hazard areas, require a minimum two-night stay, and limit operations to specific zones. The City Council is expected to consider the ordinance by September.
Pennington County, SD
Pennington County has approved a new partnership with Deckard Technologies to improve monitoring and regulation of short-term rentals.
The platform uses publicly available data to identify rental listings, track booking activity, and verify whether properties are properly licensed. County officials are encouraging operators to apply for the required license within six months. After that period, enforcement actions and daily fines may be imposed on noncompliant properties.

Chicago, IL

As the Obama Presidential Center prepares to open on Chicago's South Side this month, residents in the surrounding 20th Ward are raising alarms about a 46% spike in short term rental licenses in the area, bucking a citywide trend that saw STR licenses drop 38% overall.
Housing advocates say the concentration of Airbnb activity in historically affordable neighborhoods like Woodlawn is driving up rents and displacing long term residents, with research suggesting even modest increases in STR listings can have measurable effects on neighborhood rent levels. The Obama Foundation has reportedly advocated for more STR stock in the area but declined to comment on the concerns raised by residents.
Louisville, CO
Louisville has opened applications for short-term rental licenses ahead of the 2027 Sundance Film Festival, allowing residents to legally rent homes for stays under 29 days during a limited window (Jan. 11–Feb. 9).
The temporary policy change is designed to help absorb an expected surge of visitors, with the festival estimating a regional need for about 30,000 rooms. Outside that period, short-term rentals remain prohibited and subject to enforcement under city rules. Applicants must meet requirements like insurance, safety compliance, and a local contact within 60 minutes.
