Short-Term Rentals in Irondequoit Face Tightening Rules—But Decision Delayed

The Irondequoit Town Board is taking a hard look at short-term rentals—and not everyone agrees on the right path forward.

At Tuesday’s meeting, a proposed amendment to the town code would require rentals to last a minimum of 7 days, with anything less than 29 days under new scrutiny. In effect, this would limit the kind of quick weekend bookings that platforms like Airbnb are known for.

Proponents of the change argue it would help preserve neighborhood stability and make home buying easier for new families—not investors.

“Short-term rentals create a revolving door that disrupts community bonds,” said one supporter.

But STR hosts and advocates pushed back. Jeannine Tantalo, who rents part of her property on Airbnb urged the board to consider owner-occupied rentals separately.

“I live here too. This isn’t a party house. Guests and hosts rate each other—it’s not anonymous,” she explained.

Critics also pointed out the amendment doesn’t seem to allow for any middle ground.

“Current code already prohibits hotels and boarding houses in residential zones,” noted resident Marsha Enright. “This change would cement that, but only exempt hotels and motels—not homeowners.”

If approved, the rule would hit STRs in homes, apartments, and condos —effectively pushing all short-term stays into the commercial lodging category. But the board didn’t take a final vote Tuesday, instead deciding to table the issue for now.

So what’s next? Expect more community engagement and possibly some fine-tuning of the policy before anything’s finalized.
