Cities address STRs. Illinois considers bill; Sandpoint, ID criticizes Idaho's law. READ MORE.
Illinois
Illinois lawmakers are considering a new statewide tax on short-term rentals through House Bill 5776, which would impose a 4% fee on bookings lasting fewer than 30 days made through platforms like Airbnb and similar services.
Revenue generated from the tax would be directed into a trust fund supporting affordable housing initiatives across the state. The proposal has already sparked debate over whether additional taxes on STR bookings would meaningfully address housing affordability or simply increase costs for travelers and rental operators.
Sandpoint, ID

Sandpoint officials strongly criticized Idaho’s new statewide short-term rental law while beginning the process of repealing the city’s existing STR ordinance to comply with the legislation.

House Bill 583, which takes effect July 1, prevents cities from regulating short-term rentals beyond health and safety standards, effectively stripping local governments of many zoning and operational controls. Officials also delayed final adoption in order to publicly continue voicing concerns over what they described as state overreach into local housing policy and land-use authority.
