A long-running dispute over party houses reached a turning point when the Verona City Council amended its short-term rental ordinance on Aug. 10, 2026. The city had enforced a seven-day minimum stay designed to discourage weekend bookings that generated noise complaints from neighbors. That floor now comes with an exit ramp for owners who live close by.
Under the amendment, an owner may rent below the seven-day minimum after applying for an exemption with proof of residency within 25 miles of the property and no more than two city citations in the past year. Council members also approved three rental permits that night including a contested Steeple Point Way listing.
CITRUS COUNTY, FL
A proposed short-term rental ordinance in Citrus County will not move forward yet after commissioners paused it on August 11 and asked for more work on the draft. The measure would strengthen rules for vacation rentals including Airbnb properties.

Commissioners framed the delay as a search for balance between property rights and neighborhood quality of life. Complaints about noise, parking, garbage and excessive occupancy prompted the effort which began with a unanimous vote to build a rental registry covering stays of six months or less.
PORTSMOUTH, VA
The short-term rental ordinance under council review would end a permitting vacuum that has lasted for years. The Portsmouth draft requires owner-occupancy and an annual registration linked to a zoning permit.

Council members are still weighing the language rather than voting on it, and no adoption timeline has been set publicly. Whether the occupancy requirement survives review is the open question for investors holding rental property in the city. Portsmouth currently has no ordinance, no registry and no cap on how many rentals can operate.
Portsmouth has no rules for short-term rentals. That could soon change.: https://t.co/SK1eAW373N

PACIFICA, CA
Two of the strictest provisions in a coastal California short-term rental ordinance may not survive state review. Staff at the California Coastal Commission reversed a January 2026 recommendation and now advise removing Pacifica's owner residency rule and its 60-night unhosted cap.

Commissioners consider the item on August 12 head of an April 2027 deadline with Mayor Christine Boles asking residents to speak at the hearing. The ordinance keeps its ban on corporate operators along with a single-property limit, good neighbor conditions and a 150-night annual cap that applies citywide.

SEATTLE, WA
Party rentals are drawing fresh scrutiny after a violent night on Capitol Hill. Seattle police are investigating a triple shooting that happened just after midnight on August 11, 2026 at a short-term rental near 10th Avenue East and East Lynn Street.

Three victims turned up at area hospitals with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds after other attendees drove them there. The home had been booked through Airbnb specifically to host the event. No suspects have been named and the Gun Violence Reduction Unit continues to process evidence while Seattle licensing rules limit operators to two units citywide.
