WESTLAKE, OH

A new short-term rental restriction took shape in Westlake on July 16 when City Council adopted an ordinance banning for-profit social events including pop-up parties across residential districts. The ordinance gives the city a direct tool against ticketed gatherings advertised at rental homes.

Complaints from Ward 1 residents drove the change with Councilman Duane Van Dyke bringing the proposal forward after a late-night party and a second advertised gathering at a nearby short-term rental. Operators should review house rules and booking screening before the summer season ends.

ANN ARBOR, MI

City Council members in Ann Arbor will consider a resolution this July 20, 2026 directing the city attorney's office to draft an ordinance imposing a six-month moratorium on new short-term rental licenses.

The resolution would also task City Administrator Milton Dohoney with leading a study of short-term rental impacts and recommending ordinance changes. Records showed 295 licensed short-term rental units citywide as of June 12, several of them multi-bedroom properties. No moratorium takes effect unless council approves both the resolution and the subsequent ordinance.

Officials in Banner Elk voted last July 13 to call a public hearing on proposed amendments to the town's short-term rental ordinance with the council hearing set for August.Town Manager Rick Owen said legal challenges exposed provisions that were not enforceable under state law.

Owen stressed the amendments would not ban or cap rentals but would clarify usage and occupancy tax collection. The rules exclude long-term and monthly rentals and subdivisions that already prohibit short stays.

SALT LAKE, UT

Hosts in Utah's capital face a new compliance regime after Salt Lake City's short-term rental licensing ordinance took effect July 1, 2026 that will require a separate business license for each unit, two night minimum bookings, and a 200 night annual cap.

Buildings with 10 or fewer units qualify for a single license while larger properties may licence only 10% of units. Speaking at the council's July 14 meeting, District 3 representative Ashlyn Moretts requested exceptions for downtown condominiums.

An unanimous Planning Board vote last July 13, 2026 advanced Alameda's draft short-term rental ordinance to City Council which will limit permitted rentals to owner-occupied primary residences or eligible units on the same property.

Prohibitions cover accessory dwelling units, deed-restricted affordable housing, SB 9 lot splits, and properties with unresolved code violations. Operators must secure annual permits tied to business license renewal, carry liability insurance, name a local contact, and display permit numbers in online listings.

MORRO BAY, CA

In Morro Bay, officials have launched an online tool listing 24/7 emergency contacts for every permitted short-term rental in the city. Residents can now reach a designated contact directly about noise, parking, or other issues before escalating to Code Enforcement or the police non-emergency line.

Adopted in 2020, the STR ordinance caps full-home rentals in residential zones at 175 and requires a 175-foot buffer between new properties. Permits renew annually with inspections every four years.

MCCURTAIN COUNTY, OK

Legal conflict over short-term rental tax revenue fight between two neighboring Oklahoma municipalities has reached court with Hochatown suing Airbnb, the Oklahoma Tax Commission and the City of Broken Bow. Improper mapping in Airbnb's tax system, the town alleges, routed its short-term rental sales and lodging taxes to Broken Bow instead.

Hochatown asks that the money sit in escrow pending resolution and that a court name the rightful recipient. The destination reports more than $22 million in yearly tourism revenue.

LIBERTY TOWNSHIP, OH

A Butler County judge has continued to August 11 a hearing that will decide whether two Granada Court homes in Liberty Township can keep operating as short-term rentals after trustees sued the owners for leasing under 30 days in violation of the township zoning code.

Owners argue they are grandfathered from 2025 zoning updates while pending state bills House Bill 109 and Senate Bill 104 could strip Ohio townships of authority to ban or cap short-term rentals.

LITTLE ELM, TX

Enforcement action is under review in Little Elm after a shooting at a short-term rental birthday party injured a teenager late Friday. Police responded to 911 calls about gunfire near White Oak and White Pine drives at 11:30 p.m. while a preliminary investigation traced the incident to a rental home booked for the party.

The injured teenager sustained non-life-threatening wounds with most attendees identified as Lewisville High School students. Town ordinances prohibit parties and events at short-term rentals so officials are weighing enforcement against the owners.
