CIRCLEVILLE, OH
Legislation advancing through Circleville's Judiciary Committee on July 13 would reallocate the city's transient lodging tax and tighten collection from short-term rentals. The measure amends Ordinance 22-88 to double the Pickaway County Visitors Bureau's share to roughly $200,000 beginning in 2027 with Circleville Council to review the said ordinance on July 21.

Officials noted that Airbnb and VRBO operators currently pay little into the bed tax with cost estimating $4,000 to $5,000 each year.
PLAINFIELD, NJ
Resistance from local hosts continues to shape Plainfield's short-term rental debate as the City Council tabled its revised ordinance at second reading last July while approving every other agenda item.

The council first advanced heavy restrictions in October 2025 then tabled them after operator pushback. A softened June version capping rentals at 15 bookings per year and barring non-owner-occupied properties now faces the same delay with no revised vote scheduled.
NAHUNTA, GA
A new zoning ordinance in Nahunta would cap occupancy at travel trailer parks and ban short-term rentals inside them. The city council held its first reading of Ordinance No. 26-07-002 last July 6 and set a 30-day minimum stay that prohibits nightly and weekend-only transient rentals. A second reading is set for August 3.
The measure limits stays to 90 consecutive days within any rolling 12-month period followed by a mandatory 14-day vacate period. Operators face fines up to $500 per day and possible business license suspension.
SPRING LAKE, MI
A proposed zoning change in Spring Lake aims to ease short-term rental parking requirements for smaller units. Reviewed by the Village Council on July 13, the amendment would allow one-space dwellings such as condos to operate as short-term rentals for up to four guests.
Existing ordinance mandates two off-street spaces for six occupants plus one per three additional guests. Planning Commission staff will study peer municipalities and whether condos warrant separate standards before recommending changes.

TRAVERSE CITY, MI
A new accommodation tax could soon fund roads and police in Traverse City if City Manager Ben Marentette succeeds on his announcement on July 14 for a coalition of destination communities lobbying Lansing to legalize a surcharge worth a potential $7 million a year.
Traverse City wants tourists to help pay the bill: a lodging tax on hotels and short-term rentals could raise up to $7 million a year for roads, police calls and other crowd-driven costs. 7 million visitors a year, and locals are footing the tab. pic.twitter.com/KEl2HH1gog

The measure would also reach short-term rentals which currently escape the region's 5% lodging assessment because that charge applies only to properties with more than 10 units while the surcharge would fall on guests rather than license holders. For now, the change hinges on Lansingwhere bipartisan House Bills 5138 to 5140 remain stalled in committee.
NEWPORT BEACH, CA
Vacation rental operators in Newport Beach could face new restrictions after a July 14 council study session addressing Fourth of July mayhem. City Manager Seimone Jurjis recommended reevaluating short-term lodging rules while council members pushed for tighter controls and cameras at rental homes.

Residents criticized rentals used as party houses on the Balboa Peninsula where more than 400 people were detained over the holiday. No rules changed yet as officials described the effort as an initial planning phase.
KEENE, NH
A proposed ordinance in Keene would define short-term rentals and permit them by right in all residential zones for stays under 30 days to eliminate special-permit requirements. City staff introduced the measure last May 2026 and the city with about 50 units operating citywide currently has no STR rules.

At a joint committee meeting on July 13, councillors and planning board members flagged concerns that non-hosted rentals could remove long-term housing, then tabled the ordinance for later discussion.
LINN, WI
On July 14, the Wisconsin Court of Appeals struck down Sister Bay's four-bedroom cap on short-term rentals and ruled it preempted by the state's Right to Rent law under Wis. Stat. §66.1014. The decision reversed an earlier Door County circuit court judgment favoring the village.

Four property owners who are represented by the Wisconsin Institute for Law & Liberty had risked fines reaching $5,000 per day. The statewide ruling bars municipalities from limiting how many bedrooms guests may use.
MOORE COUNTY, TN
The dispute over short-term rental control at The Retreat at Sunset Bluff near Monteagle intensified after more than 40 lot owners filed a counter-lawsuit against developer Chip Hayes. They are seeking up to $5 million in damages and alleging fraud, self-dealing, HOA mismanagement, and unpaid common-area property taxes
The suit follows June lien notices from a New York cash-advance firm claiming $80,960 owed on Hayes's rental company. A March 18 owner vote that struck his five-year exclusive rental contract and ended his control by a 67% supermajority.

HAMILTON, OH
News coverage by https://www.haystack.tv/
Neighbors are demanding closure of an Anderson Township short-term rental after 15 to 20 shots were fired during a June 27 party of roughly 80 people. Two bullets struck a truck parked near a home where children slept.
Township officials have launched a civil investigation and are reconsidering zoning rules adopted last 2024. The owner introduced a three-night minimum yet the property remains open for bookings as the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office continues its case.
