Vacation rental growth stalled in Bella Vista on night of July 27 as the city council rejected a plan to expand short-term rental permits. The cap remains at 600 after members turned down an increase to 687, a nearly 15% jump that would have opened up 87 additional permits.

Council members split 4-1 against the proposal with one abstention which ended a debate that packed the chamber. Opponents cited concerns over neighborhood character while supporters credited rentals with drawing quality visitors to the region.
MARQUETTE, MI
Tourism pressure has pushed Marquette toward a possible new levy as the City Commission discussed a proposed hotel tax that would also apply to short-term rentals like Airbnb and Vrbo. Commissioner Mike Larson floated this idea on July 27 as a way to fund infrastructure.
City Manager Karen Kovacs noted that 20,000 residents host up to 35,000 visitors during peak weekends and questioned who should pay for the strain. No formal action followed and staff will explore whether state legislation could make the assessment possible.
BUENA VISTA, CO
A pivotal short-term rental discussion lands on the Buena Vista agenda this week as trustees convene a July 28 work session to advance new licensing caps. Staff is expected to present a narrower draft ordinance that ties caps to zoning districts instead of townwide license categories.

The plan would set the lowest allowance in R-1 residential areas while denser zones permit more. About 195 licenses already cover close to 11.9% of local lots and the moratorium on new permits holds through September 2026.
ANCHORAGE, AK
New registration rules require Anchorage short-term rental hosts to sign up with the municipality by July 30, 2026. Ordinance AO 2025-115 (S-2) covers any property rented for under 30 days from spare bedrooms to entire homes and previously permitted B&Bs.

Owners must submit address, ownership, and occupancy details through the free portal at Muni website. Starting July 31, a municipal STR number must display on all listings while unregistered operators risk fines after a 30-day grace period running through September 30.

While the city’s new vacation rental registration requirement has not changed, the Anchorage Assembly extended the grace period for hosts to comply. https://t.co/SUOLQQleCO

FOREST PARK, IL
Six police reports piled up between February and July 2026 at 905 Lathrop Avenue after neighbors in Forest Park Illinois grew fed up with a rowdy short-term rental. Police Chief Ken Gross still would not brand the home a chronic nuisance because the ordinance counts only three serious offenses within six months.
Forest Park, IL Village Code on Chronic Nuisance Property Abatement
Complaints about noise and public urination fall outside that definition. Mayor Rory Hoskins said on July 27 the village is drafting registration rules for short-term rentals with fees funding administration.
INDIANAPOLIS, IN
A deadly gap in Indianapolis rental oversight drew attention after a July 26 party shooting on North Delaware Street wounded a 15-year-old girl among roughly 300 guests. Owner Jack Haniels argued that safety and legality fell to booking platform VRBO.

His short-term rental registration had lapsed under a city ordinance carrying a $150 annual fee and $500 fines. Officials issued a violation notice giving him 30 days to register.
NORTH CHARLESTON, SC
A fatal shooting at a North Charleston short-term rental has renewed calls for tighter oversight after a teen party turned deadly on a Saturday last July 26. One juvenile was killed and three others were injured when gunfire erupted while officers responded to a noise complaint.
Neighbors now want stronger restrictions after stray bullets struck nearby homes. City officials say the current ordinance already bans these gatherings and enforces a three-strike policy that revokes licenses after a fourth violation.

Airbnb "hosts" that run unregistered "ghost hotels" don't belong here. According to local and county regulations, these short-term rentals (STRs) / “Ghost Hotels” are all in violation and do not pay their fair share of taxes and fees.
