NORWICH, VT
Homeowners renting short-term in Norwich must now register with the town and pay a $250 fee after the selectboard unanimously adopted interim zoning bylaws at its July 22, 2026 meeting. The rules took effect immediately and will expire in July 2028.
Permits will require owner-occupancy, run through December 31 annually, and allow inspections by the zoning administrator. Standards cover fire safety, off-street parking, and occupancy limits of two people per sleeping room while violations can draw daily fines until corrected.
OMAHA, NE
According to Councilmember Ron Hug, a short-term rental registration ordinance is heading to the Omaha City Council within the next month. The measure would require every short-term rental in the Nebraska city to file a manager's name and emergency contact details with the city.

Hug says police and firefighters could not identify who ran a property after an overdose death in a rental in his district in February 2026. His earlier plan which is modeled on Lincoln's licensing rule drew enough pushback that he narrowed it to registration.

COLUMBUS, MS
Short-term rental operators in Columbus could soon hit a ceiling on permits with Mayor Stephen Jones asking the city attorney last July 21 to determine whether the council can limit how many rentals run at once.
About 40 properties hold permits under the October 2025 ordinance which mandates annual permits, a designated local property manager, and posted guest information. Council cleared five additional rentals the same evening while no cap language exists and no vote sits yet on the calendar.

Officials opened a review of the 2020 short-term rental law in Beacon during a July 20 City Council discussion. Council members showed no appetite for a ban and asked City Attorney Nick Ward-Willis and city planner Natalie Quinn to draft enforcement amendments.

City Administrator Ben Swanson reported that just 39 of 96 identified rentals hold registrations with 23 secured this year. Draft revisions could raise the $25-per-day fine and push Airbnb and Vrbo to remove unregistered listings.
JONESBORO, AR
Residents of the West End and Bridger Place neighborhoods pressed Jonesboro City Council last July 21, 2026 to tighten short-term rental rules after a May party at an Airbnb property drew police, an arrest and several towed vehicles.
City Attorney Carol Duncan said Jonesboro's existing ordinance already allows privilege license revocation for nuisance properties but the privilege license system needs revision. Officials cited roughly $80,000 for third-party tracking software as a barrier to identifying unregistered listings.
