MERRILLVILLE, IN
Short-term rental oversight reaches the agenda in Merrillville this August 18 as the Town Council weighs rules for platforms including Airbnb and Vrbo at its 7820 Broadway Ave. chambers. Hosts there answer only to state requirements today which means a 7% sales tax plus an innkeeper's tax for stays shorter than 30 days.

The council pairs that discussion with an 11-acre planned unit development at East 81st Avenue and U.S. 30 anchored by a gas station and car wash. Hobart officials meet Monday, August 17 on a 59-acre housing agreement.
SOUTH BEND, IN
Short-term rental policy moves into a public forum this week as Fourth District Councilmember Dr. Heidi Beidinger hosts a town hall for South Bend Indiana residents. The event is set for Wednesday August 19 on South Michigan Street.

Beidinger will be joined by other members of the South Bend Common Council who plan to attend. The meeting is built around resident participation and offers a direct forum for the public to weigh in on how short-term rentals should be managed in the city.
MEREDITH, NH
Selectboard members in Meredith New Hampshire approved changes to how the town licenses short-term rentals during their August 10 meeting. The vote cut a redundant plot plan requirement from applications and removed the mandate to list a state Meals and Rentals Tax license number on local paperwork.

Hosts who live on their rental property now fall under a new owner-in-residence category with a reduced annual fee of $200 down from $400. The board said these owner-occupied units draw less on town resources than fully absentee rentals.
SALT LAKE CITY, UT
New short-term rental rules in Salt Lake City are already drawing pushback from Airbnb which sent the city a cease-and-desist letter over its enforcement methods. The company alleges investigators used fraudulent guest accounts to catch suspected violators.

Since the licensing requirements began July 1, 2026, the city has limited rentals to commercial and mixed use zones capped stays at 200 nights annually and set a two night minimum. With around 400 properties believed to be operating illegally, officials say they will continue enforcement despite reviewing Airbnb's objection.
LORAIN, OH
Two teenagers died early Sunday, August 16 after an argument at a short-term rental on 700 block of Washington Avenue in Lorain turned into gunfire inside the home and on an exterior staircase. Marc L. Taylor, 18, and Silas Henry, 17, were pronounced dead at the scene while 19-year-old Alexander Gibbons was arrested and charged with felonious assault before pleading not guilty. He is held without bond and returns to court on August 24.
The Lorain Building Department issued a cease and desist order the following day because the property lacked the annual short-term rental registration the city has required since 2023.
WARREN COUNTY, VA
A Warren County planning panel voted 5-0 to recommend a conditional-use permit for a new short-term rental near Front Royal Virginia despite pushback from neighbors. The Dry Run Court property in Shenandoah Farms belongs to owner Laura Larson who plans to retire there while renting it out to help cover costs. The application now moves to the Board of Supervisors for a final vote.
Warren County's Conditional Use Permits
Residents Irina Zakharov and Wyatt Bates told commissioners the narrow unlit road already struggles with emergency access and speeding drivers unfamiliar with the area. Chairman Robert Myers said the permit could be pulled if Larson fails to meet its conditions.
