CENTREVILLE, MD

A rise in rental applications pushed the Centreville Town Council in Maryland to approve a six-month moratorium on July 16. The pause covers applications for and construction or expansion of short-term rentals plus boardinghouses and bed-and-breakfast establishments.

Zoning Administrator Peter Flint said officials determined the existing ordinance no longer reflected current activity. The update aims to establish clear enforcement guidelines including third-party inspections and bring definitions closer to Queen Anne's County. The town stressed that it is not abolishing short-term rentals and counts roughly four with operating certificates today.

COLUMBIA, MO

Columbia's proposed short-term rental amendments return to the City Council on Aug. 10 with neighborhood opposition freshly organized. Residents in Historic Old Southwest spent mid-July raising alarm over revisions that would cut the number of Airbnb and Vrbo applications requiring a conditional use permit and hand licensing to city staff as administrative work.

The neighborhood association met at the Columbia Public Library on July 17 and again inside the neighborhood on July 18 after city staff cancelled their scheduled appearance because of a conflict. Council members cannot vote during a work session but they can schedule a future vote or return the package to Planning and Zoning.

SANTA BARBARA, CA

Anyone renting a property short term in Santa Barbara has until the 15th to file starting August 1, 2026. The city confirmed the deadline extension on July 27 following a City Council ordinance adopted June 16 that replaced the longstanding 10th of the month cutoff.

Mailed payments must carry a USPS postmark dated on or before the 15th and metered marks are not accepted. Some months fall earlier for hand delivered filings so operators should check the published due date table rather than assuming the 15th every time.

HOLMES BEACH, FL

Nine agencies and interest groups sat down with vacation rental operators when Holmes Beach code compliance staff convened their annual stakeholders meeting on Tuesday, July 21. Police Chief Bill Tokajer spoke alongside fire rescue officials and representatives from the Manatee County Property Appraiser and Tax Collector offices.

Themed "Preserving Paradise Through Partnership," the two-hour session at city hall focused on shared responsibility for a rental market that has grown from 245 registered units in 2016 to roughly 1,600 today. Officials outlined how Rentalscape software now scans more than 10,000 rental websites each day to identify unregistered properties.
