SCHROON, NY
Residents for and against a proposed one-year moratorium on new short-term rental permits spoke at a public forum on October 15 as the Town Board weighs a pause that would let the town review its permit law in place since 2021 while it revises its zoning law.

The moratorium would apply only to new permits, leave existing ones in place and could end early once the zoning review wraps up. The proposal would also amend how long permits last under the existing law.
OPELIKA, AL
First reading of a revised rental licensing ordinance is set for the City Council meeting on October 20 which would require short-term rental operators to hold a city business license and pay an annual tax of 1% of gross receipts with a $100 minimum down from 1.5%.

Each rental would need a designated adult contact living in Lee County who can reach the property within one hour of a city request and listings would have to show the license number. The rules would take effect February 1, 2027 giving existing operators 30 days to obtain a license.
HOBOKEN, NJ
A ban on short-term rentals in rent-controlled units and a cap of 60 rental days per year are part of an ordinance Mayor Emily Jabbour plans to introduce at the City Council meeting on October 21 which would also set safety standards and a registration process for hosts in a city that currently has no short-term rental rules.

The proposal follows a fight at a rent-controlled apartment used as a short-term rental on October 18 when a regional SWAT team responded and police arrested four adults on aggravated assault charges while a 17-year-old was also charged.
FRESNO COUNTY, CA
Voters will decide on November 3 whether to approve Measure A, a 12% transient occupancy tax on hotel rooms, short-term rentals and RV parks in Fresno County, one of three California counties without such a tax, with revenue projected at about $4.5 million a year for the general fund.

Similar measures appear on nearby ballots where Farmersville's Measure P proposes a 10% tax while Madera County's Measure U would raise its unincorporated rate from 9% to 11% and Lemoore's Measure P would lift its rate from 8% to 12%.
NEW HAVEN, CT
Investor-owned short-term rentals would be banned under an ordinance amendment that goes to a public hearing before the Board of Alders Legislation Committee on October 22 as Airbnb emails customers urging them to oppose it while supporters including Mayor Justin Elicker plan a City Hall rally on October 20.
Airbnb has begun trying to mobilize New Haven customers to oppose a bill that would ban investor-owned short-term rentals in the city — as local elected officials and union leaders plan on rallying this week to support the proposal as an effort to protect housing for long-term…

The proposal would bar rentals of 30 days or less in units with no primary resident while owner-occupied home-shares would need a local license renewed every three years and could host no more than 10 people or two per bedroom, not counting minor children.
NEW ORLEANS, LA
Four felony counts of malfeasance in office, forgery, computer fraud and injuring public records await a former Department of Safety and Permits employee accused of creating fraudulent short-term rental licenses including one for a French Quarter property where rentals are banned after she confessed to police on October 19.
Elisha Collier was suspended after the department director learned of the allegations on May 5 and was fired on September 17 while the city has since limited its permitting system to authorized short-term rental staff.
NASHVILLE, TN
Fourteen unpermitted short-term rentals most near downtown in Metro Council Districts 5 and 21 received warning notices between October 11 and October 17 and have until mid-November to comply or face further enforcement compared with 21 notices issued during the entire previous month.

— WKRN News 2 (@WKRN) October 18, 2026
The push comes as more than 11,000 rentals are advertised in the city while fewer than 7,050 hold active permits, a gap that has narrowed since unpermitted properties nearly doubled licensed ones in July 2025.
HOCKING COUNTY, OH
Palm Side Paradise LLC filed an answer and counterclaim on October 14 in Hocking County Common Pleas Court, accusing the 20 homeowners suing over its short-term rental in a Green Township subdivision of trying to interfere with its sale of the house to an unnamed buyer and claiming damages of more than $25,000 if the deal is blocked.

The neighbors refiled their suit in September after a judge dismissed the first version in April and they seek a permanent injunction enforcing covenants that limit subdivision homes to single-family use while the five-bedroom rental hosts up to 16 guests.
SAN DIEGO, CA
Lowering the city's vacation rental cap split coastal council district candidates Richard Bailey and Nicole Crosby at a candidate forum on October 17 ahead of the November 3 election as Crosby pledged to sharply cut the number of rentals on her first day in office including in Mission Beach, where 30% of homes can be permitted compared with a 1% cap citywide.
Bailey said he would consider changes but warned against losing more than $50 million in rental tax revenue, noting that the Coastal Commission must approve changes in coastal areas which Crosby later conceded.

The city has written 168 tickets. Officials say Airbnb won't share address-level data, which slows down finding the rest.
Should booking sites have to hand that over? We're honestly split.
