OAK PARK, MI

City officials in Oak Park have confirmed this week that a six-month moratorium on new short-term rental licenses is in effect with staff now reviewing records to determine how many rentals operate in the city and whether dedicated rules are needed. The council approved the freeze on August 17, 2026 for properties rented 30 days or less while existing compliant rentals may continue.

Residents now have until October 15 to complete the city's Short Term Rental Policy Survey which will guide long-term policy after an August 3 shooting at a rental on Coolidge Highway left two dead and two hospitalized.

HAWAII COUNTY, HI

Owners of short-term rentals on the Big Island now face a registration mandate that began September 1, 2026 under Hawaii County's Ordinance 25-50. The rule covers any hosted or unhosted accommodation rented for 180 days or less and a grace period created by Bill 175 gives operators until December 31, 2026 to sign up through the county's online portal.

Hamakua Councilwoman Heather Kimball expects the four-month window to bring every active rental into compliance by the end of the year. A separate measure known as Bill 147 would add punitive fines and expand permitted zoning for hosted rentals but the council deferred it to September 15.

ALAMEDA, CA

A proposed short-term rental ordinance goes before the Alameda City Council on September 15, 2026, capping a year of public hearings and a Planning Board review. The rules would allow both home sharing while the host is present and vacation rentals during a temporary absence, and since every listing must be tied to a primary residence there would be no annual cap on rental nights for owners or for tenants hosting with landlord permission.

Each host would need an STR permit and business license, follow occupancy limits and a ban on parties, and keep paying the existing transient occupancy tax. ADUs, rent-subsidized units, and homes with no-fault or Ellis Act evictions would be excluded while current operators get a 90-day amnesty and legacy protections after one year of operation.

WINDEMERE TOWNSHIP, MN

Owners applying for short-term rental permits in Windemere Township now face clearer fee rules after the Town Board adopted Ordinance 2026 ORD07 on September 4, 2026. The amendment updates the fee section of the Pine County township's 2025 ordinance and took effect upon passage and publication.

The revised Section 4.3 confirms that the board sets the permit fee and that every application fee is non-refundable. It also adds that permits issued within an existing three-year term carry a pro-rata share of the three-year fee rather than the full amount.
