- DeWitt, NY: The Town Board voted unanimously on September 28 to ban short-term rentals of 29 nights or less starting January 1, 2027 with fines beginning at $1,000 for a first offense.
- Hopkins, MN: City Council unanimously approved a one-year moratorium on October 6 that bars new short-term rentals in every zoning district and pauses all applications while leaving existing rentals unaffected.
- Corpus Christi, TX: The city paused its Short-Term Rental Committee after Coastal Family Homes filed a September 29 notice of claim under House Bill 2127 targeting parts of the rental ordinance.
- West Hartford, CT: Lisa and Alexander Khan are suing the Zoning Board of Appeals in state Superior Court after the five-member board denied their appeal of a town order barring short-term rentals of their five-bedroom home.
- Los Angeles County, CA: Burbank, Culver City, Hawthorne, Lynwood and Rancho Palos Verdes are among seven cities proposing higher lodging taxes to fund police, fire and other public safety services.
📍 Regional Highlights
- Monterey Park, CA: Measure AAA would raise the transient occupancy tax on short-term rentals from 13% to 16% and on hotels from 13% to 14% for about $600,000 in added yearly revenue.
- Alhambra, CA: Measure HT would extend the city’s 12% hotel tax to short-term rentals such as Airbnb and Vrbo for an estimated $134,000 a year.
- Erie, CO: Ballot Issue 3E asks voters to approve a 3.5% lodging tax on short-term rentals and other stays of 30 days or less that would start January 1, 2027 and raise about $150,000 a year.
- South Haven, MI: The Zoning Board of Appeals upheld the city’s denial of a permit on September 28 for a patio, pergola and firepit at a registered short-term rental because the additions would expand a nonconforming use.
- Buffalo, NY: Only 219 of the city’s 602 short-term rental listings are inspected and licensed according to a review of city enforcement data.
- Bellevue, KY: Mayor Charlie Cleves is urging state lawmakers to protect the city’s power to regulate short-term rentals as the city deals with more than two dozen illegally operated rentals.
- San Diego, CA: City Council candidates Richard Bailey and Nicole Crosby clashed over vacation rental rules at an October 3 debate where Crosby pledged to cut permitted rentals and Bailey cited the more than $50 million the city collects in rental taxes.
- Carrboro, NC: Resident objections to three planned short-term rental homes on an undeveloped lot led the Town Council to schedule a work session with the town attorney on options that include a possible pause on such developments.
- Encampment, WY: Town officials are studying Jackson’s short-term rental ordinance as a possible model for the roughly 15 rentals that Councilman Steve Reichert says operate under a permit moratorium in place since October 2025.
✅ New Ordinances Approved
- Santa Barbara, CA: City Council unanimously approved two ordinances on October 6 that set two-night minimum stays, 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. quiet hours and a one-rental-per-owner limit for more than 2,300 listings with the inland rules starting in January 2027 and the coastal rules going to the California Coastal Commission.
- Largo, FL: Commissioners unanimously adopted an ordinance on October 6 requiring annual registration and life safety inspections for every vacation rental with a $600 registration fee and a $600 renewal fee ahead of a January 1, 2027 launch.
- Chatham, MA: The select board voted unanimously on September 29 to raise the annual registration fee to $325 for 2027 up from the $200 set in August and $50 before that.
- Polson, MT: The City Commission approved an annual short-term rental permit on second reading on September 21 with a $30 fee after a motion to table it failed.
💬 Catch Up on Discussions
- Birmingham, AL: The City Council Committee of the Whole voted 4-1 on September 30 to advance an ordinance requiring hosts to hold a city permit, a business license and liability insurance.
- Birmingham, MI: The city commission postponed action on proposed short-term rental regulations in a 6-0 vote on September 28 so staff can revise the language.
- Lake Worth Beach, FL: Commissioners voted 3-1 to continue the public hearing to October 6 on Ordinance 2026-09 which would lift the city’s ban on stays shorter than 30 days.
- Kingston, NY: A 3% occupancy tax on hotel, motel and short-term rental stays was set for a full Common Council vote on October 6 after a 4-1 committee recommendation.
- Keweenaw County, MI: The Planning Commission tabled proposed zoning amendments for an annual short-term rental permit system after an October 5 hearing where most speakers opposed the changes.
- Philipstown, NY: Draft rules requiring a two-year permit with a $90 application fee and a $100 inspection fee went to public hearing on October 1.
- Solano County, CA: Supervisors introduced amendments to the county’s rental ordinance on October 6 that add minimum stay, refund, advertising and recordkeeping rules aimed at 31-day listings.
- Keene, NH: Ordinance O-2026-09-A would allow short-term rentals by right with limitations in 15 zoning districts and goes before City Council at a public hearing.
- New Windsor, NY: The Town Board reviewed the town’s first proposed short-term rental regulations at an October 5 workshop including a rule that owners live on-site during rentals.
- Midland, MI: Residents can complete an online survey that will guide city staff and City Council as they review short-term rental rules.
